So there is this guy I know, Johnathan Jack Stokes Mellish. He lives around the corner from us and everyone now and again I arrive home to find him sitting mellow in our living room. What a good surprise it always is. Now ol' Mellish has a video camera and he digs to record footage and then bang it together into a piece. Sounds quite mish-mash, no? But somehow Johno manages to produce such effortless and appealing aesthetic in his work which I believe he achieves without trying at all.

On Monday Stokes Mellish rocked up at the Capital and told me about a video he recently made for Petite Noir, something he 'threw together on Saturday'. Amped, let's check it out...

What I love about this video is that it doesn't seem to have a time or place and there is no story line per se but it still flows with ease. Mellish has grabbed some footage and found his own rhythm within the images, lacing them over each other and flirting with different images and their common threads to build up to the beautiful snakey tongue climax.

Over and above the entrancing visuals, I think there is something to be said regarding the notions of stigmas, race, culture, class and Western/European/First World ideologies. Now I don't for a second believe any of it was preempted from the directors side, but I don't believe this video would have the same allure to it if the characters portrayed in it were white trendoids. There is something, I can't place my thumb on it, that is very intriguing about seeing African blipsters in a very 1st world inspired piece - it says something about the Africanism of old and how it's losing its grip on the younger generations as we all slowly but surely find influence and inspiration not from looking back to our forefathers but rather looking outwards at what's happening in the rest of the global community.

PS: that was difficult to write/word correctly while bearing in mind how very iffy people get in SA when talking about race. I'm not casting shade, in case you weren't sure.

WATCH: Isochronous live in Berlin

Undoubtedly one of the best bands from South Africa. Them, and kidofdoom.

I watched both bands perform on Sunday at Kirstenbosch and I was once again filled with awe, admiration and respect for all members of both bands. These guys absolutely LOVE what they do and there is no pretense in their creation of sound for your enjoyment. I've never before seen people enjoy, sweat, beat and with all their senses feel the music they are making more than Richard and Ryk - during the kidofdoom set both of them were soaring in their own world. I can't explain; no one ever has or will be able to put words to a sound and atmosphere and feeling that is created by Isochronous and kidofdoom. It's all yours for the taking and interpretation, live more than anything else.

It is rumoured that Sunday was kidofdoom's last show. I sincerely hope, especially for the sake of those who haven't relished in their live sound, that this is not true. 'Cos we all know that a kidonshrooms loves kidofdoom :)

Where The Fuck Have You Been?

Jissou, my last blog post was, like, ages ago!

I can't even begin to imagine how traumatised you must feel after popping into this address at least once a day and not finding an update. How have you lived with yourself? How have I lived with myself?

That's just the thing. I needed a hiatus. Like bands, you're nothing if you haven't worked so damn hard that you need a break from it all. That, and I didn't have the time. I've changed my place of occupation from the MFM 92.6 Breakfast Show in Stellenbosch to the Lunch Show on 2oceansvibe Radio in Cape Town.

I've also been uprooted from my place of living for the last 3 years and now live in a half-way house of sorts until I move at the end of the month to Observatory. I spent the last 3 years living in Big Pink with some of the best people alive on this planet - it started out with myself, Beer, Le-Roi, Bison, Porra and Basson, and since then we've had a whole bunch of gypsies in and out of the house... Maggie, Fred, Gerko and Mari have all graced Big Pink and there have been many a random drifter/band for a night or 2, including Christmas '08 and '09 that I spent with Tidal Waves eating their specialties and consuming bags of the good stuff.

And my room! Gawsh! My garage room was where it all happened... the amount of feet that passed through there, the amount of conversations until the early hours, the amount of bongs keeshed, the amount of music listened to, the amount of ideas dreamt and failures dealt with, the lovers and the friends and memories and the drawings on the floor carpet... That place was home for me, through and through. We were the best lives of our days...

But that's in the past and we're only moving forward... As soon as I am settled again (being displaced for months on end is awful, my belongings are in 3 different places and it blows) I will continue giving you, my beloved and treasured reader, everything and more that you need in life. That's right. And more...

I know, right? This shit only happened like, yesterday, and already I'm claiming the 'round-up'. That's the way it is these days - in internet years (like dog years, only times a lot more) things become old and outdated within a matter of days. Sometimes even hours.

Our guys over at WAA dropped the story on Thursday morning (here) that Die Antwoord kakked Sean out on FB, then soon followed with a rebuttle from Metelerkamp and his representatives (here) which was about the legalities and then today (here) Ninja replied to that with a letter that seems honest, written from at least a layer or 2 beneath the image/persona.

Kanye West can pull some real dick vibes (but then again we all do - he's just in the spotlight) but then he can come pull a fast one and redeem himself. Well, in my books at least.

Kanyeezy has used 9 of his songs in a 34min film that depicts Kanye's character falling in love with a half-human half-phoenix character.

The film, much like the video for 'Power', portrays many symbolic references which seems to have created a bit of debate on the interwebs. Google at will.

This new venture from producer and drummer Peach van Pletzen sees him get white-boy ghetto alongside Jaco van der Merwe and local creative director Louis Minnaar.

This song, featuring Jack Parow and Tumi Molekane, is exactly what the title suggests. I hope you understand Afrikaans to appreciate the full value of the verses.

As an aside - it's quite interesting to see what 3 guys in a similar age-group from different parts (012, 011, 021) of the country choose to rap about.

At first glance you realise that Kid Cudi is, as my homeboy Franky Tha 3rd would say, 'indie as fuck' - notice the black rimmed glasses and the something-retro around his neck? Yes, signs of a hipster. Very in, very 'right now'.

Taking a quick glance back at his debut album, The Man On The Moon: The End Of Day, we see that this dude really digs his recreational drug use ('Enter Galactic', 'Pursuit Of Happiness', both blisstrippy beauts - listen to 'Enter Galactic' here) and worked with ultra scene-cats Ratatat. Indie as fuck indeed, Frank.

VISIT: Teniqua Treetops

I recently had the great fortune of staying for a weekend in the middle of a thick, lush forest, in a tree-house in the Outeniqua mountain range. Yes, a luxury tree house, in the forest. What's better is that not only is this resort self-catering, but also eco-conscious.

Just off the N2, atop the Kutara river valley, is haven of comfort and relaxation. The tree houses are build out of wood and finished off with tented canvas to create partitions between kitchenette, bedroom and balcony, kitted out with all you will need for a getaway weekend with the frills.

The balcony is where it is all at, let me just tell you. It over-looks the Kutara river valley of dense forest and it is on this balcony that you will braai, jacuzzi and sit on the throne - never before has dropping the Cosby's off at the pool felt so liberating!

Have you ever watched your boerie braai from the comfort of a jacuzzi?

Didn't think so.

There is a piece from the digitally enhanced live-action rotoscoped film Waking Life that has always fascinated me, where one of the 'characters' discusses the idea of evolution happening quicker and with the gaps in between evolutionary periods becoming shorter and shorter. The proof of this is so tangible, and watching the trailer for The Social Network, a film about the (so far, short) life of Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg, is a clear portrayal of this idea.

In less than a decade this guy went from being a Harvard genius upstart to having the last couple of years of his life immortalized and aggrandized in a feature film, filled with all the charms of a Hollywood hit complete with excess and success, betrayal and victory and a bit of sex here and there.

I look forward to this film.

At an Isochronous show, what is the one thing you are almost certain to hear?

I can't say that it is one set sentence, but I can tell you that it goes something like, 'Dude, of all of SA's bands, the world has to hear Isochronous!'

I couldn't agree more.

So when are really meant to happen, they do. This, from the latest Isochronous press release:

The group will be opening for famed German rock star Marius Muller-Westernhagen on his countrywide tour in October 2010. Westernhagen has sold over 15 million records to date and the tour itself has already sold over 82 000 tickets.

It all started when Marius attended one of their shows at Zula Sound Bar in Cape Town earlier this year. He was “completely blown away”! "Their singer and guitarist Richard Brokensha is extremely charismatic" said Westernhagen. "They really are fantastic musicians who produce wonderful compositions and melodies. This is the kind of star appeal that can reach masses. Isochronous is the band everyone is looking for but rarely finds. I will try my utmost to bring them to Germany. I'd love to introduce them to Germany on my tour in autumn."

This is what the star wrote in an online article in July 2010, and not even a month later, Isochronous got the call that he will be taking them to Germany to be the opening act for his Germany tour during October 2010.

Congratulations guys, go dominate ze Germans.

Junip is José González' band.

Although the band only released an EP in 2005 and then seem to take break (from what, I don't know) for 5 years, they are back together now and performing live in preparation for the début album.

It's about time - a tip-top international act on South African shores!

It was confirmed today via rockingthedaisies.com that the British dance-punk, new-wave quartet will be performing in October's Rocking The Daisies festival, one of South Africa's top music events, and one of the few with an eco-friendly consciousness.

The band released their second album, The Optimist, earlier this year which apparently boasts a 'darker sound' in comparison to their fresh-faced debut, 2007's The Fantastic Playroom.

If you are not yet up to speed with NYPC's music, make a plan. You DO NOT want to be the one not singing along and jiving your fists in the air during their set - Friday, 10pm, Main Stage. See you there, front-left.

I need your help. I actually just need a couple of clicks and a quick type - easy peasy.

If you recall, last year I was entered into my first SA Blog Awards. 'Sweet!' you might say? Oh, sweet yes, but no easy task when it comes to actually getting something more than a free slice of pizza at the awards ceremony. Remember, 'blog award' is a a rather ambiguous label. Die Vloed Is Oppad

It has been a while. You've probably forgotten the intensity, explosions, soundscapes and bliss in their music. Soon though, a little more than a month away, Foto Na Dans will be releasing their sophomore album, with their first single, 'Die Vloed' (The Flood) due to annihilate your ears within a couple of weeks.

This album also introduces the new bassist, John Haveman, after Theuns Schoonwinkel left under amicable terms, but should nonetheless prove as huge as we know Foto Na Dans to be.

Writers and adventurers Beer Adriaanse and Marc Dey have embarked on a month long expedition across South Africa find out to what extent social altruism is alive in our vibrant county, and in which socio-economic classes it is most prevalent. The community of Judah Square is made up of about 40 families and lies in the middle of the township. The valley is scatter with RDP houses, cows, pigs, chickens and children.

We spent the night at Sista Kerry’s B & B. Judah square is festively painted with motifs ranging from the classic Haile Selassie portraits to the more off the wall: Bob Marley in a suit of amour on a white horse slaying a dragon.

We feasted on a lentil stew, and Brother Ras Mau Mau’s garlic rolls. Brother Ras is from Kenya and gets his nickname from the infamous Mau Mau guerilla warriors. This brother does not live up to the terror of the title; he is a freethinking travelling man who believes in Ubuntu, knowledge, love and brushing his teeth with ash (which he promptly taught us).

How many encounters end up like this? Nothing is really dealt.

So since it has been so long, let me deal properly.

It's been a hectique number of weeks, but fully productive. Most of my time has been consumed by planning, directing, organising and then finally executing the new video for 'Pills' from the Prety Blue Guns. I worked with Adriaan Louw and it was a brilliant experience. The guy is a film nerd, but in all the good ways. The shoot lasted a straight 16 hours and ended up being rather exciting. The post-production now lies in Adriaan's more than capable hands.

Many days and nights were spent in Cape Town in preperation for the shoot, and this then inevitably winded up into a night of klapping the town. Small town lads can't resist the city lights. And Assembly was the prefered place of to oets-oets. Never disappoints.

What starts out with good fun throwing chucking about some 'island styles' here and there at Discotheque, ends with waking up at 4am the following afternoon.

Assembly staff are fuckin' on it, let's not joke here. Some vrot reveller drops his glass, and normally okes would start mincing around like they're at The Glen trying to avoid glass in the shoe, but before you know it - boom! Glass gone, clean dancefloor, good vibes continue!

Speaking of Assembly, this Friday marks the 1 year birthday of Discotheque, the regular Friday night party at South Africa's best live gig venue - big, BIG night let me tell you! There will apparently be a big announcement being made, to coincide with the launch of www.theassembly.co.za V2.0.

I speak some Good Oke on this blog, you've seen it and without realising it you've probably allowed a couple of phrases and words straight from the Good Oke dictionary slip into you day-to-day vocab. Don't shy away from it, embrace it I tell you...

Some examples: fully, lank, oke, nought, bru, boet - just to name a few.

Just because I speak Good Oke doesn't mean I can't speak proper English. It's a choice to speak Good Oke, to acknowledge all the different colours you can paint your language in. I spent high school speaking tip-top English, and that was all good, but speaking Good Oke is more exciting. Get involved...

Beyond the laughs and quirky lines, this is a beautiful film with some incredibly apt commentary. Screw the average ratings given by Rottentoes, this film rocks my world. And it may very well just rock your world too. It's the kinda fliek you are more than likely to watch twice, maybe thrice in a week after first seeing it, just so you can fully appreciate all the stark contrasts that are placed together.

Contrasts? Think a spiritually enlightened army Lieutenant Colonel.

I've never been one for the toilet humour. But sometimes, when dealt with well, the reality of the situation can be turned into a real laugh! Enjoy...

As much as we try to convince ourselves otherwise, the WORK POO is inevitable. For those who hate pooing at work, following is the Survival Guide for taking a dump at work.

CROP DUSTING -- When farting, you walk briskly around the office so the smell is not in your area and everyone else gets a whiff but doesn't know where it came from. Be careful when you do this. Do not stop until the full fart has been expelled. Walk an extra 30 feet to make sure the smell has left your pants.

FLY BY -- The act of scouting out a bathroom before pooing. Walk in and check for other pooers. If there are others in the bathroom, leave and come back again. Be careful not to become a FREQUENT FLYER. People may become suspicious if they catch you constantly going into the bathroom.

ESCAPEE -- A fart that slips out while taking a leak at the urinal or forcing a poo in a cubicle. This is usually accompanied by a sudden wave of embarrassment. If you release an escapee, do not acknowledge it. Pretend it did not happen.. If you are standing next to the farter in the urinal, pretend you did not hear it. No one likes an escapee. It is uncomfortable for all involved. Making a joke or laughing makes both parties feel uneasy.

JAILBREAK -- When forcing a poo, several farts slip out at a machine gun pace. This is usually a side effect of diarrhoea or a hangover. If this should happen, do not panic. Remain in the cubicle until everyone has left the bathroom to spare everyone the awkwardness of what just occurred.

COURTESY FLUSH -- The act of flushing the toilet the instant the poo hits the water. This reduces the amount of airtime the poo has to stink up the bathroom. This can help you avoid being caught doing the WALK OF SHAME.

WALK OF SHAME -- Walking from the cubicle, to the sink, to the door after you have just stunk up the bathroom. This can be a very uncomfortable moment if someone walks in and busts you. As with farts, it is best to pretend that the smell does not exist. Can be avoided with the use of the COURTESY FLUSH.

OUT OF THE CLOSET POOER -- A colleague who poos at work and is proud of it. You will often see an Out Of The Closet Pooer enter the bathroom with a newspaper or magazine under his or her arm. Always look around the office for the Out Of The Closet Pooer before entering the bathroom.

THE POOING FRIENDS NETWORK (P.F.N) -- A group of co-workers who band together to ensure emergency pooing goes off without incident. This group can help you to monitor the whereabouts of Out Of The Closet Pooers, and identify SAFE HAVENS.

SAFE HAVENS -- A seldom-used bathroom somewhere in the building where you can least expect visitors. Try floors that are predominantly of the opposite gender . This will reduce the odds of a pooer of your gender entering the bathroom.

TURD BURGLAR -- Someone who does not realise that you are in the cubicle and tries to force the door open. This is one of the most shocking and vulnerable moments that can occur when taking a poo at work. If this occurs, remain in the cubicle until the Turd Burglar leaves. This way you will avoid all uncomfortable eye contact.

CAMO-COUGH -- A phoney cough that alerts all new entrants into the bathroom that you are in a cubicle. This can be used to cover-up a fart, a WATERMELON, or to alert potential Turd Burglars. Very effective when used in conjunction with an ASTAIRE.

ASTAIRE -- A subtle toe-tap that is used to alert potential Turd Burglars that you are occupying a cubicle. This will remove all doubt that the cubicle is occupied. If you hear an Astaire, leave the bathroom immediately so the pooer can poo in peace.

WATERMELON -- A poo that creates a loud splash when hitting the toilet water. This is also an embarrassing incident. If you feel a Watermelon coming on, create a diversion. See CAMO-COUGH.

NEW MUSIC: LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

I've been listening to this album for a couple of weeks now and it has been glorious. James Murphy has done it again, and proves why he remains to be one of my most favourable artists.

Now the reason I waited until today (official album release date) to holler this your way is because of the following... About a month ago at a secret LCD Soundsystem show, James Murphy went down on his knees on stage in front of the audience and said the following:

"If you got a copy of the record early and you feel like sharing it with the rest of the world, then please don't," He added: "We spent two years making this record and we want to put it out when we want to put it out. I don't care about money – after it comes out, give it to whoever you want for free but until then, keep it to yourself."

What a guy!

So without any further ado, please get your ears to this album, now! (click her for freeload link) It is the 3rd and final release from Murphy as LCD Soundsystem (bleakers) but he has been working on soundtracks lately, so let's hope there is still more to come from this 40-year old who rocks harder and more legit than many half his s/age.

As much as the winter months lend themselves more easily to softer sounds of acoustic music or singer-songwriters like Iron & Wine, LCD Soundsystem is able to put that groove in your step that you last felt on the last day of school before summer holidays.

The best way I have heard this sound being described is as "an in-joke that everyone gets".

Dubbed the MK Music Video Project (MK MVP), MK is inviting production companies to approach any band they believe complements MK's progressive channel strategy and to pitch on their behalf. Similarly bands and record companies who would like to put their songs and ideas forward, should approach a South Africa production company to do so.

Says Victor Edward Eckard, Head of Content for MK: The South African music and production industry offers a wealth of exceptional talent. Through MK MVP we hope to further stimulate this market and bring that talent to the fore, allowing our artists and production houses to show their true colours and in so doing offer our viewers compelling content.

The following should be taken into account when pitching for MK MVP 2010:

MK MVP pitches are only open to South African production companies.

1 Week II

Last week was a mad flurry of last minute planning and hoping everything falls into place because if it doesn't you're just fucked but somehow you holding thumbs and breaths manages to make it feel like coming out on top at a game of Jenga ... there's a big mess but you're still ahead. Just.

Thursnight presented the revellers with Pretty Blue Guns at Bohemia, supported by Youth. Adriaan hollered at me and said something about "Hey skollie, let's jam" and then the next thing I know we're shooting liquor off the kitchen table of his woman's kitchen. And he calls me a skollie?

Its unbelievable what kind of riff raff one can encounter at Bohemia these days... Adriaan and I found ourselves at either end of the pots in the guys bathrooms, enjoying conversation and a wee. By the way, I've realise why girls go to the bathroom in pairs - taking a slash with a bud in the room, continuing your conversation as if nothing has changed between the bar counter and the toilet, immediately makes the whole shindig more pleasant than being just another oke taking an awkward piss at the cramped pots, or worse, being the one who is next in line but won't use the vacant urinal because its 'the one in the middle'.

Anyway, some oke mumbles a comment, and after an exchange of words we come to the understanding that this cat reckons we're hardened fags because of the shoes we're wearing.

What? I couldn't believe that we still have people, in a town centered on academics, that believe without a shadow of a doubt in their minds, that a person is queer because they wear a certain style of shoe or something just as ridiculous. Nonetheless, I figured this character would be a hoot so I tried to engage him to find out what else lurks in the mire of his backwards brain. Adriaan, however, is a bit more action than talk, and after we were told by Homophobe Harry that I "take in the ass because my leather shoes have buckles" and Adriaan gives it in the ass because of his "pointy girl boots" Adriaan proceeded to lift said pointy girl boot to around the height of seated Homophobe Harry so he could get a good look at them before the same boot pushed the friendly chap off his chair... what a lag! I could wax lyrical about how we taunted this guy for the rest of the evening, but I guess you had to be there to understand and to see the look of confusion, disgust, contempt, hatred, anger and loathing when we proceeded to dry-hump each other outside the window of this chap's table. Classique.

Even though the excitement peaked early, the Guns did not disappoint with yet another impeccable set. Friends were invited on stage and sing-a-longs were shouted with gusto and the cramped stage meant for some stumbling and falling and amps being knocked over and cymbal stands taking hits... great fun!

Woke up on Friday morning with my head banging against the wall, did the show, packed my bags and climbed into the car and off we were to AfrikaBurns. And what a great crew we had - there were about 15 or so who made up Camp Jikeleza, and created an amazing time for ourselves!

We had an unbelievable bedouin tent made of wild wild orange and yellow neon stretch, as well as a generator and gas (Johan is 'n kampeerder van formaat!) which provided power for our fridge, stove and a pumping sound system! Daytime was hazed away meandering around Tankwa Town, meeting some fascinating individuals and exploring the art and camps around the circle. Night time brought with it another dimension to AfrikaBurns... and our night time playlist was absolutely massive! Okes were going mad! Let me just tell you this one thing - that Haezer setlist from Assembly's Discotheque makes EVERYONE move! Drunk or sober, high or low, old or young, that mixtape gets the party started! "Let's get fucked! Let's get fucked! Let's get fucked!"

Next thing I know, its myself, Maggie and Tourmaline (what wildcats!) and a light that we followed throughout the night. Lipstick, trucks, trannies, lights, flashes, fire, whoops, howls, Desert Rose, carcasses, 13-people-on-1-scooter, bicycles and and and...

Tuesday and Wednesday were spend recovering. And basking in the afterglow of Afrika Burns.

Daneel is back from the UK and pretty much everyone is happy about that. So how does one celebrate having broer back in the homeland? We meet at Sgt. Peppers on Friday to watch some Super14 rugby where Stormers owned the Crusaders! "Try time!"

After that, a zef rap rave jol awaited at KLT. Die Antwoord were in town, and the crowd turned out in strength.

You see, I reckon Die Antwoord has evolved into a spectacle, an attraction, an entertainment piece, a theatre extravaganza of lower-class decadence... it's all an act. And ~~Waddy Jones~~ Ninja is the best actor on stage. He doesn't step out of character once. Yo-Landi, a very adept actor, portrays her role very well, although there are brief moments where she 'steps out of character' for a moment. She's a carbon-copy of Britney Spears - both claim a hillbilly-esque background, both know sex sells, both rap some bullshit that means nothing but gets the crowd to sing along. Yes, Yo-Landi is "a mother fucking rich bitch" and she's claiming it every time she's on stage wearing revealing clothes, every time she strokes her snatch on-stage and slides her hand up her stomach and under her shirt and she knows it with every erotic sexual moan, groan and whine she sounds out in the background while her husband and partner in crime raps his verse.

And Ninja? Oh, he's just a white version of Lil Wayne. Both are covered in chappies, spit that ill shit yo, and rap on stage with their crew.

The only difference is the ironic, post-modern inversion of hip hop culture that sees Die Antwoord exchange the glits and glam and bling for Spongebob underwear and a pair gold chiffon not-so-tight-as-they-were-when-she-first-wore-them tights.

I really recommend you go watch a show. Don't go there with the same expectations as you do if you go watch a band. Actually, don't go with any expectations at all. Actually, don't ever have any expectations of anything ever and you'll be better off. Go to be entertained. There are so many ways for people to enjoy this act - why do you think they have such wide appeal? Rap along, pump your fists to the beat, ogle,Yo-Landi, stretch you hand out for a high-5 from Ninja, wonder about DJ Hi-Tek, laugh with the haters, laugh at the haters, laugh at the wild fanatics, revel with the fanatics, question the psychologies and societal context or don't question anything and just go with it... like I said, there is entertainment to be had, its up to you to decide on which level you want to enjoy it. I guess getting kronk before helps.

Oh. On Saturday, I shot a video with Zinkplaat. Its a one-take; its 'experimental' (is that what you call something as a safety clause in case it might come out a major flop?:) and if the end result is decent there will be a couple of more made during the year.
